Report finds slaughterhouse where workers trampled sheep took no action to prevent it, despite warnings

ANIMAL EQUALITY: Most troublesome to us all is that the footage captured an official inspector standing by as sheep were left to struggle in panic and pain; he merely offered a nod of approval.

LUKE ANDREWS: ‘A Welsh slaughterhouse where sheep have been trampled by workers and trapped underneath carcasses failed to take action to prevent animal suffering despite being warned in January, a regulator’s report has found. Farmers Fresh abattoir, in Wrexham, has also risked leaving sheep without adequate bedding, water and food…

It comes as shocking footage, taken by Animal Equality activists and published today exclusively by MailOnline, shows a dead sheep being dragged through the holding areas in front of live sheep… The report by slaughterhouse regulator the Food Standards Agency also warned that the business had failed to take steps to prevent meat contamination, despite being warned in January this year…

Animal Aid’s campaign manager Tor Bailey called for the abattoir to be suspended… ‘This cannot go on’, she said. ‘This slaughterhouse must be suspended from all operations until it has proven it can abide by laws designed to prevent the worst suffering’. ‘Additionally, we are calling on the Welsh government to make slaughterhouse CCTV mandatory, in line with England and plans for Scotland, but to go a step further with indicative monitoring. ‘This allows spot-checks to ensure both workers and regulators are doing their job.’

An Animal Equality spokesman said: ‘Both this audit report and our investigation show a blatant disregard for these already terrified animals and for the health of the British public’. ‘Perhaps most troublesome to us all is that Animal Equality’s footage captured an official FSA inspector standing by as sheep were left to struggle in panic and pain; he merely offered a nod of approval’.
